Former CROP Scientific Director Else Øyen honoured

ANNOUNCEMENT: Former CROP Director, Else Øyen, receives the Norwegian Association of Sociologists' Honorary Award for 2017.

Professor Emeritus Else Øyen (born 1934) holds a Norwegian Mag.art and PhD in sociology from the universities of Oslo and Bergen respectively, with subsidiaries in criminology and psychology.

Her research has made an impact on policy and policymakers, and she has contributed greatly to the Norwegian public debate as a defender of the welfare state. An example of this can be seen in her active involvement in public discussions during the run-up to the Norwegian EU referendum in 1994. Else Øyen has also worked as an adviser for a wide range of national and international organisations, including the Norwegian Research Council, the International Social Science Council, the World Health Organisation and UNESCO.

As Scientific Director of CROP (1991-2006) and leader of the Center for International Poverty Research at the University of Bergen (2001-2003), she has been a central force in international poverty research,

By selecting Else to receive the Honorary Award 2017, the Committee of the Norwegian Association of Sociologists recognises the importance of her pioneering work in Norwegian and international sociology, as well as her role as an organiser and institution builder.
