Agenda 2030: Poverty, Climate Change and Sustainability

In its Agenda 2030, the United Nations defines the eradication of poverty in all its forms and dimensions as "the greatest global challenge and an indispensable requirement for sustainable development". The document defines climate change as the other great challenge of our time due to its effects on present and future generations and its unprecedented and disproportioned impact on the world's poorest and most vulnerable.
The main objective of this course is to analyse these challenges and to provide PhD candidates with tools to address them. Transdisciplinary research (TDR) and more specifically, Sustainability Science, offer the possibility to address urgent societal problems focusing on the transition to sustainability.

The course is led by Alberto Cimadamore (Scientific Director, CROP, University of Bergen) and Noel Keenlyside (Professor, Geophysical Institute, University of Bergen). It is one of six parallel courses at Bergen Summer Research School (BSRS) in 2017, spanning disciplines within health, humanities, and social sciences. In addition to the courses, there will be a series of joint sessions about research tools for PhD candidates, but also plenary sessions with keynotes, debates, and an excursion.
BSRS is an annual multidisciplinary research school, that has been running for ten years, emphasising the need for multidisciplinary approaches to tackle Global Challenges. It attracts PhD candidates and junior researchers from all over the world, working on some of the greatest challenges of our time. Each course typically receives 10-20 candidates.
