Preliminary Results from the PoLAMe Project

Preliminary Results from the PoLAMe Project

SEMINARS: The PoLAME project is holding two seminars to present the first results of the project.

14 October 2014 | University of Bergen, Norway

CROP is a partner in the Poverty, Language and Media - The Cases of Argentina, Brazil, Colombia and Mexico project that has received funding from the Research Council of Norway's Latin America Programme.

The project is the result of a partnership between the Department of Foreign Languages at the University of Bergen and CROP, which has gathered an international and multidisciplinary team of researchers to study the linguistic representations of poverty in Mexican, Argentinian, Colombian and Brazilian media.

The project is based on the understanding "that hegemonic views conveyed by mainstream or agenda setting media tend to naturalize poverty within the 'common sense' and, at the same time overlook causal interpretations or explanations of poverty production and reproduction". In order to test this hypothesis the researchers will combine established theories of poverty with linguistic corpus analysis.

At this event the first results from the project will be presented:

Dr. Elena Rojas Mayer, CONICET, Argentina, will give an an overview of the usage of the term poverty in the Argentinian press and spoken language.

Dr. Gabriel Quiroz Herrera. University of Antioquia, Colombia, will present an approach to the linguistic representation of poverty in the Colombian press.
